Marijuana use by adolescents subtly impairs certain brain functions, but not to the extent of alcohol.

The journal Clinical EEG and Neuroscience reports that teenagerswho consume 20 drinks a month for as little as a year can incur neurocognitive damage. The damage manifests itself in both brain structure abnormalities and sluggishness when performing cognitive tasks.

While adolescents who smoke marijuana regularly show similar symptoms, they are far less severe. Previous testing of adults hasn’t found much of a link between marijuana use and long-term brain function decline.
